Top Balinese Temples You Must Visit

Bali is best known as the island of thousand of temples. The name is not given without any specific reasons. We know that Bali is the place where the biggest Hindu population in Indonesia inhabits. That’s the reason why there are countless temples in Bali. Balinese temples are not only used for worshipping activities. They are also the popular tourism destination in Bali. But, of course there are several essential rules that must be followed if we want to visit a temple, like wearing a traditional scarf and decent clothes. Temples are the right place if you want to know how the real Bali face is; the face of optimism, friendly, and God-loving. You can recognize the life of real Balinese in the temple. So, in this opportunity, we’re going to present you several famous temples in Bali that you shouldn’t miss while you’re visiting the island of temples.

Pura Besakih (Besakih Temple)

Pura Besakih is the holiest temple in Bali. It’s often called as the Mother Temple. Pura Besakih is located about 3,000 feet up Gunung Agung which is situated in East Bali. The age of the temple is believed to be a hundred years old. The temple complex consists of 23 temples and each temple serves different purposes. The most important temple in Pura Besakih complex is Pura Penataran Agung. The temple is in the six levels and is also the most impressive temple in Pura Besakih. Your visit in Pura Besakih may be interrupted by vendors who try to sell you guide tours. Therefore, the best time to visit the temple is early in the morning before the temple is crowded with tourists who want to see the beauty of the temple. Also, you have to wear comfortable shoes since the temple has a lot of stairs.

Pura Tanah Lot (Tanah Lot Temple)

Tanah Lot Temple is probably the most famous Balinese temple. The temple is situated in the beautiful Tanah Lot that stands on a rock just off the shore. The best view that you can get from Tanah Lot is at sunset, where the picture is often taken to be in a postcard. The temple is believed to be built by a priest who lived in the 15th century. Tanah lot is nowadays considered to be one of the most important temples in Bali. The temple once went through restoration that cost more than a million dollars to keep it from falling into the sea.
